Where Is The Grand Canyon?

In Our Beautiful State of Arizona.....
of Course!

Where Is The Grand Canyon?
The very first time we visited Arizona, we went to the Grand Canyon. And although we have visited this interesting place a few times since our first visit and have taken hundreds Grand Canyon pictures, the beauty of this place can only be truly appreciated by actually being there and seeing it with your own eyes.

Each time we have visited we realize just how spectacular this ancient marvel of nature is and in the realm of things, how insignificant our time on this planet really is.

Where Is The Grand Canyon?
There are nearly 5 million visitors from all over the world each year and most see it from their cars, just as we have, stopping along the way at different overlooks along the South Rim. Each view is different and at many of the overlooks, looking straight down, you might see a thin pencil of turquoise weaving along the canyon floor. This is actually the Colorado River. A closer look with binoculars might find you peering at whitewater rafters as they cruise the river!

The Canyon offers many opportunities not just for the casual tourist, but also for those who are adventurous

and may prefer hiking or backpacking, mule riding to Phantom Ranch or taking a Grand Canyon Family Vacation whitewater rafting excursion on the Colorado River.

And although there are no Arizona Wineries near this area, stop in Flagstaff, Arizona on the way back (80 miles southwest of the Canyon) and enjoy some great pours at Cuvee 928 Wine Bar!

History of The Grand Canyon & Facts About The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in our stunning state of Arizona. It is contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon, and visited it on several occasions to hunt and enjoy the magical scenery.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and is over a mile (6,000 feet.) deep. A few billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While the specific geologic processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists, facts suggests the Colorado River established its work through the canyon at least 17 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon as it looks today.

Before European immigration, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its numerous caves. The Pueblo people thought of the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) as a holy place and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Germany, who arrived in 1540.
