Arizona Wineries
Are there wine grapes growing in this southwestern state? We can emphatically say “Yes!”
Arizona Wineries: Are there wine grapes growing in this southwestern state? We can emphatically say “yes!” One of the best kept secrets of this region is the excellent, award winning wines that a handful of Arizona Wineries (and counting) are making. And although modern wine producing in this state only began in 1973, these wine makers are attaining critical acclaim for producing some of the best American wines in the country!
Because the sun shines most of the time, coupled with cool nights and warm days, it provides just the right climate to grow a variety of grapes for producing wine. The soil, which is enhanced by volcanic minerals, provides interesting and unique flavors that cannot be duplicated anywhere.
We have personally visited many of the Vineyards in Arizona Wine Country and look forward to visiting them all. We are proud to include our home state in this southwest wine guide! Included in these pages you will find some of our personal experiences and favorite wines as we take our own wine tour!
The Arizona Wineries Can Be Divided Into Three Regions
Visit Northern Arizona Vineyards
Visit Sonoita/Elgin Arizona Vineyards
Visit Southeastern Arizona Vineyards
The northern Arizona Vineyards and wine tour starts just south of Sedona. Travelling east of Route 89A a visitor will find tasting rooms and vineyards in Page Springs, Cornville, Cottonwood, Jerome and Camp Verde. The temperatures are more comfortable pleasant here than in the Phoenix area with cool evenings and mild daytime weather. Most of the vineyards and tasting rooms are set on acreage with dramatic views of mountains…perfect for tasting these excellent southwest wines.

Sonoita/Elgin Vineyards This wine tour starts south on Highway 83 to Sonoita. Travelling through the scenic and rural countryside a visitor will find cattle ranches next to clusters of vineyards and wineries. Take Elgin Road and Highway 82 for more wine tasting rooms. This is the only area in Arizona that has been designated as an American Viticulture Area (AVA) for having unique climate, soil and physical features that distinguish it from other areas.

Southeastern Vineyards Southeastern wine tour is in Cochise County. Travelling on Interstate 10 heading east a visitor will find vineyards and wineries in the towns of Willcox, Bowie and San Simon. This area is becoming increasingly more popular for producing fine wine grapes.
