Verde Canyon Railroad In Arizona

The Verde Canyon Railroad is an interesting Arizona place to take out of town visitors. About an hour northwest of our home is the little town of Clarkdale which is home to the Railroad.

When you board the train, you step back in time when train travel was at a more leisurely pace. Two FP7 restored locomotives pull the renovated cars along the historical route. It’s a four-hour round trip that takes you through magnificent, towering cliffs, past ancient Native American ruins and by many kinds of trees, cactus and wildflowers.

During one trip, we reserved seating in a first class car and enjoyed comfortable sofas while sipping wine and munching on appetizers. The attendants on the train are entertaining and extremely knowledgeable, pointing out some of the wildlife and describing the different types of vegetation along the way. Adjoining outdoor viewing platforms allowed us an up-close view of the terrain. We even saw a bald eagle that seemed to be flying alongside us!

The train travels through a 680-foot man-made tunnel. The Verde Canyon Railway reverses at Perkinsville Ranch, a nearly deserted town.

On selected Saturday evenings from June through September, the Railroad offers Grape Train Escapes a wine tasting train ride featuring unique wines and food. This is an excursion we are planning to do with some of our Arizona friends very soon. And, the nearby towns of Cottonwood and Sedona will offer comfortable accommodations after a most enjoyable train ride!
